Field note

When Vietnam opened its roads to travellers in 1991, it was a handful of local riders in Đà Lạt — fluent in French, then English — who took the first Europeans up into the highlands. No brochure, no itinerary. Just a bike, a route made up as you went, and whoever you happened to meet along it. Everything since — every "Easy Rider" outfit from here to Hà Giang — traces back to that. We still ride it the same way.
